Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia Commits over $28 Million in Grants

Abingdon, VA, July 29, 2025 — The Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia is pleased to announce more than $28 million in funding awarded through its latest HOPE and IMPACT grant cycles, supporting 40 nonprofit and government organizations dedicated to advancing health, opportunity and economic vitality across the region. These investments underscore Wellspring Foundation’s ongoing commitment to building a stronger, healthier and more resilient Southwest Virginia.

Since its founding, the Wellspring Foundation has worked to create lasting change by investing in programs and services that address the most pressing needs of communities in Washington, Grayson, Russell and Smyth counties. This year’s grant cycle saw a record number of applications, demonstrating both the continued demand for funding and the growing reputation of the Foundation as a key partner in regional development.

“As the Wellspring Foundation continues to grow, we are deeply grateful for the relationships we’ve built with dedicated local partners who are delivering meaningful services throughout our region,” said Marvin Gilliam, Chair of the Wellspring Foundation Board of Directors. “On behalf of the Board, I extend our sincere congratulations to each of this year’s recipients. We’re excited to see the impact these programs will have in our communities.”

The 2025 HOPE and IMPACT grants supported a broad range of initiatives focused on areas including public health, child and family wellbeing, workforce training, educational access and community economic development. From helping families access quality healthcare to preparing individuals for careers in high-demand local industries, each funded project plays a role in shaping a stronger future for Southwest Virginia.

“Each year we gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that exist in our communities, and we are proud to support organizations that are not only addressing urgent needs but also building pathways to long-term prosperity,” said Sean McMurray, Executive Director of the Wellspring Foundation.  “It’s an honor to partner with so many individuals and groups that are deeply committed to helping this region thrive.”

Each application was carefully reviewed through a thorough and competitive evaluation process led by the Wellspring Foundation’s Board of Directors and professional staff. This process included an in-depth analysis of proposed outcomes, alignment with the Foundation’s mission and the potential for lasting impact. Ultimately, the Board selected a diverse group of grantees that represent innovation, collaboration and deep-rooted commitment to serving their communities.

A complete list of the 2025 HOPE and IMPACT grant recipients is available on the Foundation’s website at www.wellspringva.org.

The Wellspring Foundation offers two major competitive grant opportunities annually. HOPE Grants are intended to support early-stage or pilot initiatives as well as expansions of existing programs. These grants are ideal for organizations that are seeking one-time funding to explore new approaches or test innovative service models.

IMPACT Grants are designed for larger-scale initiatives with proven effectiveness or significant potential to drive measurable outcomes. These grants often support strategic growth, infrastructure development or multi-year efforts that serve a broad segment of the community.

Both grants are open to nonprofit organizations and government entities serving Washington, Grayson, Russell and Smyth counties in Virginia, with funding priorities aligned with the Foundation’s core focus areas: health, children and families, workforce development, education and economic development.

Organizations interested in applying for funding in 2026 should begin preparing now. The Wellspring Foundation will once again offer two grant opportunities next year and applicants are strongly encouraged to review the updated guidelines and eligibility requirements posted on the Foundation’s website.

Applicants should note that all proposals must be submitted through the Foundation’s online grants management system. Interested organizations can find detailed instructions and resources along with contact information for technical assistance at www.wellspringva.org.
