About Us

About Us

The Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia began operations as a private foundation on July 1, 2022. The Wellspring Foundation is a philanthropic organization dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing for the Virginia residents of Washington, Grayson, Russell and Smyth counties through purposeful partnerships.

In the midst of the region’s abundant natural resources and growth opportunities, we recognize many challenges facing our communities are rooted in poverty, poor physical and mental health, addiction, lack of universal access to essential healthcare, population decline and economic challenges. We realize that no one can tackle these issues alone, and that’s why we’re here to help. Our operating model emphasizes convening people and facilitating discussions to address regional issues.

We are grateful to partner with organizations throughout our four-county service area by providing much needed resources that will enable them to enhance the health and wellbeing of residents in their respective communities. We look forward to supporting collaborative efforts that will have a lasting, transformative impact on our region.

Our History

The Foundation was created in late 2021 following the sale of its minority ownership stake in Johnston Memorial Hospital (JMH). That sale established a local, independent organization with resources to serve the Virginia residents of Washington, Grayson, Russell and Smyth counties for generations to come. The Foundation registered its new name, Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia, with the State Corporation Commission in February 2022. Shortly thereafter, the Wellspring Foundation submitted paperwork to the Internal Revenue Service to change its status from a not-for-profit supporting organization of JMH to a nonprofit, independent private foundation. The IRS approved the Wellspring Foundation’s application effective July 1, 2022. The first grant commitment from the Wellspring Foundation was made in August 2022.
