Abingdon, VA, August 25, 2026 — The Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia is pleased to announce the election of its new officers and appointment of its newest member to the board of directors effective July 1, 2026.
New officers elected include Dr. JoAnn Price as chair, Mr. Thomas Revels as vice-chair, Dr. Karen Elmore as secretary and Mr. Karl Kindig as Treasurer. The newly elected officers have served as board members since the Foundation’s inception nearly five years ago and bring a wealth of knowledge and diverse perspectives to their executive leadership roles.
“We are thrilled to announce the election of new officers for the Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia,” said Sean McMcMurray, executive director of the Wellspring Foundation. “Each of these individuals are deeply rooted in our region, are passionate about our communities and are excited to serve in leadership roles within the Foundation.”
Dr. JoAnn Price spent her career in nursing with a focus on women’s health, followed by more than a decade of teaching in the nursing program at Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) in Abingdon, prior to her retirement in 2023. She resides in Lebanon, is very active in her community and church and enjoys supporting numerous community projects.
A resident of Whitetop, Mr. Thomas Revels is semi-retired and runs his own business as an independent consultant specializing in crafting health risk management solutions for self-funded employer health plans. Prior to his time in Southwest Virginia, he spent nearly 35 years in hospital management and employer-based primary care clinic operations.
Dr. Karen Elmore is the founding physician and medical director at Mountain Laurel Internal Medicine located in Abingdon. She also serves as the program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Johnston Memorial Hospital where she mentors the next generation of primary care physicians. In addition to her work, she is a Virginia Master Naturalist and an avid gardener. She and her husband reside in Abingdon and are the proud parents of two sons.
A semi-retired attorney specializing in business transactions, Mr. Karl Kindig launched his solo law practice in 2021. Previously, he held various legal and managerial positions, including president and general counsel at Pittston Coal Company in Lebanon. He resides in Abingdon, and outside of his professional work, he enjoys woodworking and bird hunting.
In addition to the newly elected officers, Wellspring Foundation welcomed its newest board member, Raleigh Hayter, in July. Hayter serves as the senior vice president and chief credit officer at First Bank and Trust Company. He began his banking career at First Bank and Trust Company in 2011 as a part-time employee, later becoming a full-time employee in 2014. Prior to assuming his current role, he served as vice president of credit review and previously as a commercial lender.
Raleigh participated in the bank’s management associate program gaining a solid foundation in all aspects of banking following his degree from the Virginia Tech Pamplin School of Business. He is also a graduate of the Southeastern School of Advanced Commercial Lending and a graduate of the VBA School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia.
Raleigh was elected to the board of directors of First Bancorp, Inc in 2021, the parent company of First Bank and Trust where he has served on the board since 2015. Hayter serves on the bank’s Senior Loan, Special Assets, Bank Secrecy Act, Security and Risk, and Fair Lending Committees. He has also served as a board member of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and a member the Finance & Investment Committee for the Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia. Originally from Abingdon, Virginia, Hayter currently resides in Bristol, Virginia with his wife and daughter.

His background in commercial lending, banking and management will bring valuable insight to our work and further strengthen the expertise of our existing directors.”

In his new role with the Wellspring Foundation, Raleigh brings a personal connection to Southwest Virginia and a strong desire to be part of an organization dedicated to strengthening the communities where we live, work and grow up. He believes in the importance of leveraging the resources created in Southwest Virginia to propel the region forward, ensuring those resources are used to support meaningful projects and opportunities for the region’s future. Raleigh is excited to work alongside the Foundation’s board of directors and staff to help make a meaningful, long-term difference in the region.
